HBO MAX becomes US home of Italian crime series “Gomorrah”
The iconic Italian crime drama Gomorrah, based on Roberto Saviano's bestseller, will be available in the U.S. via HBO MAX. The new streaming platform from Warner Media Entertainment has acquired the rights to the Italian Sky Original series, directed by acclaimed Stefano Sollima and produced by Sky and Cattleya (part of ITV Studios), in collaboration with Beta Film.
Gomorrah, which The New York Times recently rated #5 of the top 30 international shows of the decade, is centered in and around Naples, Italy, and chronicles the brutal world of the Camorra crime syndicate.
The series was among the first "local is the new global" foreign-language series on the world stage. Shot in the Neapolitan dialect, it stands for a deeply rooted authenticity. Over the years, it has gained ever-increasing success and international plaudits.
US audiences will be allowed into the complete world of the series' protagonists Ciro (Marco D'Amore) and Genny (Salvatore Esposito), which has already been shared with a passionate fan base in more than 190 territories around the globe. To date the show includes four seasons and a feature film ("The Immortal"), altogether 50 hours. The highly anticipated fifth season is currently in preparation.
Top Italian writers Leonardo Fasoli, Stefano Bises and Maddalena Ravagli, along with Roberto Saviano, have led the creative team while Francesca Comencini and Claudio Cupellini are among the series' directors. Over the seasons Gomorrah's lead cast has included Marco d'Amore (who also directed several episodes and "The Immortal"), Salvatore Esposito, Fortunato Cerlino, Maria Pia Calzone, Arturo Muselli and Ivana Lotito, among others.
Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content at HBO Max: "Gomorrah is premium storytelling with breathtaking cinematography and masterful acting that knows no geographical boundaries. We look forward to offering our U.S. viewers the opportunity to become immersed in this international gem. We are thrilled to expand our international partnerships with Sky, Cattleya and Beta Film with this smart and gritty crime drama and continue our commitment to providing high-quality, compelling dramas for our audiences."
Nicola Maccanico, EVP Programming of Sky Italia: "Gomorrah managed to cross national borders right from the start, establishing itself as a universal genre story. An international success that has highlighted the outstanding quality of an amazing production and artistic team and of an original storytelling for its ability to explore the darker side of human beings. Innovation in terms of language and industrial model as shown by "The Immortal", the box office hit feature acting as a bridge between two seasons of the series. We are very proud to see this Italian jewel making its debut on the prestigious HBO Max stage".
Riccardo Tozzi founder and CEO of Cattleya: "We are thrilled that our show has finally found a home in the US. For Gomorrah to be featured on HBO Max, one of the major content providers for international high-end series, is the culmination of its incredible journey on a global scale and for Cattleya one of its greatest achievements. Furthermore this deal sends out a very positive sign to the whole Italian audiovisual industry whose drama production has in the past years reached a prominent position in the international market."
Beta Film's EVP Oliver Bachert: "Gomorrah is the best example for European high-end drama, which is very specific and at the same time easily crosses international borders. Together with HBO MAX, we are pleased to present the new seasons to a U.S. audience and very much hope that the viewers love the show as much as the public in many countries does."
