Beta sells “Maria Theresa” to the US and throughout Europe
Beta Film's limited series Maria Theresa has not only scored record ratings throughout Europe, but also secured a row of international deals, including the US. Directed by Emmy Award winner Robert Dornhelm (Anne Frank, War and Peace, Vienna Blood), the eight hour series has been sold to Walter's Choice, a VoD-service on the PBS platform. Walter's Present acquired the rights for UK and New Zealand. Furthermore, Maria Theresa was sold to RAI (Italy), the French-German channel arte, Russia's OKKO.Tv, RED Media and Kultura as well as to RTP (Portugal).
The historical drama (4xtwo hours/8h) succeeded with excellent market shares on Austria's ORF, arte and on the public broadcasters in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. A new two-hour episode of the drama, praised by Germany's Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as "the answer to such series as 'The Crown'", is already in production.
Maria Theresa tells the impressive story of the only female ruler of the Habsburg Empire. After her father's death, the empress (1717 – 1780) has to deal with those who question her abilities to rule. Facing increasing pressure from all sides, including her own family, she has no choice but to address head-on the issues of the state and those of her marriage.
Maria Theresa is produced by Maya Production in association with MR Film and Beta Film for Czech TV, ORF, RTVS and MTVA.
