“Babylon Berlin” travels to Africa and India
Cannes, 11 April 2018. The gritty crime series Babylon Berlin by director trio Tom Tykwer, Achim von Borries and Henk Handloegten continues its international roll-out. Beta Film has signed deals for the multi-awarded show with M-Net, the South Africa-based, MultiChoice Group-owned TV service and biggest subscription TV network in Africa, as well as with India’s Tata Sky, a joint venture between Tata Sons and 21st Century Fox. In total, Babylon Berlin has been sold to over 90 territories, among them the US, Australia and throughout Europe.
Africa as well as India have only recently opened up to European productions, the latter being dominated by a strong local film and TV industry with difficult conditions for non-English shows.
First scenes of Babylon Berlin were presented at last year’s MIPDrama Screenings in Cannes, where it was honoured with the Grand Jury Prize for Works in Progress. In addition, the 16-hour series, which was a huge rating success at Sky, snapped four German TV Awards, among them “Best Drama Series”. It was praised by international media as “fabulous and stunning” (The Guardian), “dark, flashy, and addictive” (NPR) and “the most bingeable new drama since ‘The Crown’” (Vogue). Babylon Berlin runs on Netflix in the US, Canada and Australia/New Zealand.
Babylon Berlin, starring Volker Bruch (“Generation War”) and Liv-Lisa Fries (“The Wave”) is produced by X Filme Creative Pool, ARD Degeto, Sky and Beta Film.
