Munich, 26 June 2019. Beta Film has closed a row of deals for its international series slate, among them with the new German streaming platform Joyn, ProSiebenSat.1’s joint venture with Discovery. The multi-channel service acquired Álex Pinas’s acclaimed Spanish series The Pier, as well as the Nordic noir thriller Hassel and Russia’s Trigger. The Pier, a Movistar+ romantic thriller starring Money Heist lead Álvaro Morte, has been sold to almost 100 territories to date, next to Joyn most recently to Italy’s RAI and Austria’s ORF.
For the Baltics, The Pier was picked up by HBO, for Australia by SBS, for Canada by Radio Canada’s SVoD service TOU.TV Extra and for Middle East by MBC. Negotiations with a U.S. partner are about to be finalized. Earlier, The Pier was sold to France, Scandinavia, Russia and throughout Eastern Europe and Benelux, among others. The limited series is created by the acclaimed showrunner duo Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato – best known for Money Heist/La Casa de Papel – and produced by Movistar+ in collaboration with Atresmedia Studios and Vancouver Media. The Pier follows successful architect Alexandra (Verónica Sánchez/Morocco: Love in Times of War), who discovers that her dead husband Oscar (Álvaro Morte) had lived a double life.
Hassel, starring Ola Rapace (James Bond 007 – Skyfall, Wallander), has been acquired by MVS NET for Latin America, Canal + in Poland and Czech TV, among others. The ten-hour production by Nice Drama in coproduction with Viaplay, Beta Film and Lunanime follows the story of Hassel, a street-smart detective, head an organized crime task force in Stockholm, whose father figure and mentor is brutally murdered.
Trigger (Sreda for Channel One Russia) is one of the most successful and internationally best-selling Russian series ever. Psychologist Artem, who practices “provocative therapy”, is convinced that the best cure is brutally confronting his patients with their fears. The Pier and Trigger both celebrated their World Premiere at MIPCOM 2018.
