The success story continues: “Babylon Berlin” heads into third season

Nov 26 2018

The critical darling and audience favorite Babylon Berlin by Tom Tykwer, Henk Handloegten and Achim von Borries is back in production. Shooting for season three has just started in Berlin, Brandenburg and North Rhine-Westphalia and will continue until May 2019. The twelve new episodes will premiere on Sky Germany in 2019 and on German public broadcaster ARD in 2020. Season three is based on the second novel in the best-selling Gereon Rath book series by author Volker Kutscher, "The Silent Death".

Fresh off the sequel to David Fincher's "The Girls with the Dragon Tattoo", Volker Bruch ("Generation War") will reprise his role of Gereon Rath while Liv Lisa Fries ("The Wave") returns as Charlotte Ritter. Many other cast members from the first two seasons will return as well, amongst them Lars Eidinger ("SS-GB", "Sense8"), Leonie Benesch ("The Crown"), Karl Markovics ("The Counterfeiters", "Grand Budapest Hotel", "The King's Choice") and Jördis Triebel ("Dark"). Some of the new additions to the series will be Ronald Zehrfeld ("The People vs. Fritz Bauer", "SS-GB"), Meret Becker ("Munich", "Comedian Harmonists"), Martin Wuttke ("Inglourious Basterds", "Cloud Atlas"), Trystan Pütter ("Toni Erdmann", "Generation War"), and Saskia Rosendahl ("Never Look Away").

Babylon Berlin can already look back on a unique success story. The production scored record ratings in Germany and abroad and received a lot of international attention; lauded as "fabulous and stunning..." (THE GUARDIAN), "dark, flashy, and abaddictive..." (NPR) and "the most bingeable new drama since 'The Crown'" (VOGUE), the series has been sold to 100 countries by Beta Film. It swept up five German Television Awards earlier this year, among them Best Drama Series, won big at the Grimme Awards, and took home the Austrian Television Award Romy, the Magnolia Award at the Shanghai TV Festival, and the Grand Prize at the Seoul International Drama Awards. Most recently, the series was awarded the International TV Award 2018 at the Premios Ondas in Spain and honored with several BAMBI Awards in Germany.

Babylon Berlin premiered Sept 30th on public broadcaster ARD as the most watched series of the year on German television with 7.8 million viewers. Before, Babylon Berlin ran on Sky with the best ratings of non-English series ever. The 28-hour show is produced by X Filme Creative Pool in co-production with ARD Degeto, WDR, Sky and Beta Film. As a co-producer Beta Film will continue to handle world sales. Babylon Berlin is supported by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and the German Motion Picture Fund.
