First days of shooting: Beta Film investigates in “M for Murder”
Munich, 25 January 2018. It is one of the all-time classics of film history: Fritz Lang’s thriller “M” from 1931. Beta Film partners with ORF, RTL Crime and Superfilm on the contemporary reimagination M for Murder, starring Moritz Bleibtreu, Lars Eidinger and Udo Kier and helmed by renowned Austrian director David Schalko (“Braunschlag”, “Old Money”). Shooting for the six-hour-series is under way until April. In M for Murder a capital is confronted with a series of child murders, transforming the open and lively city into a society under total surveillance.
The original black-and-white film “M” from 1931was one of the first German sound films and is still regarded today as one of the most important works of film history. Multi-awarded director David Schalko, who wrote the script together with Evi Romen: "Since I re-watched the classic ‘M’ three years ago, the film has had a grip on me. How would it be today, in times of surveillance and looming fascism? Apart from the fascinating formal approach that the city is the lead actor, ‘M’ is a non-genre film including all genres - like life itself."
