Oct 23 2020

Babylon Berlin moves on: X Filme Creative Pool, ARD Degeto, Sky and Beta Film officially confirm today that the multiple award-winning and internationally praised hit series is going into its fourth season. The director/writer trio Henk Handloegten, Achim von Borries and Tom Tykwer as well as the authors Khyana El Bitar und Bettine von Borries are currently working on the scripts, based on Volker Kutscher's third novel "Goldstein". The start of shooting is scheduled for the spring of next year.
Volker Bruch ("Generation War") and Liv Lisa Fries ("The Wave") join forces once again as inspector Gereon Rath and Charlotte Ritter.

Babylon Berlin has been sold to over 140 territories worldwide, among them the U.S., to platforms and channels throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America and Australia. Germany's public channel ARD just finished broadcasting the third season with up to 4.3 million viewers/14% market share and an extraordinary number of over 10 million online viewers on its free VOD platform.
Babylon Berlin has become an epitome of high-end drama made in Germany with international relevance, praised by international media as "fabulous and stunning" (THE GUARDIAN), "dark, flashy, and addictive" (NPR) and "the most bingeable new drama since 'The Crown'"(VOGUE).
The series has collected numerous awards, among them the inaugural European Achievement in Fiction Series Award at the European Film Awards, four German Television Awards, the Grand Prize at the Seoul International Drama Awards, the Austrian Television Award ROMY as "TV Event of the Year", the Premios Ondas in Spain, and the Magnolia Award of the Shanghai TV Festival, the most important TV festival in Asia.

Christine Strobl, Managing Director of ARD Degeto, says: "Babylon Berlin will be continued. Shooting for season four will start spring 2021 in Berlin. We are very proud of this successful series, which has become such a major hit both nationally and internationally. We have once again succeeded in winning over a younger audience with Babylon Berlin - we are very happy about that."

Marcus Ammon, Senior Vice President Original Production at Sky Deutschland, stresses: "The first three seasons of Babylon Berlin have thrilled an audience of millions at Sky. We are therefore all the more excited to continue this success story with all our partners. Sky customers can look forward to another great season -- be it linear or on demand."

Jan Mojto, CEO of Beta Film, adds:
"Sold in more than 140 territories, Babylon Berlin is a flagship for German TV fiction and rivals major productions of international broadcasters and platforms. Creatives from the industry such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Jeff Goldblum and Stephen King, fashion designers like Giorgio Armani and Tom Ford have all come out as Babylon Berlin fans in recent months – and they are in good company with many millions of viewers around the world!"

"Along with the entire team of Babylon Berlin," add series producers Stefan Arndt, Uwe Schott and Michael Polle of X Filme Creative Pool, "we are very pleased that we are now carrying the stories of Gereon, Charlotte and all the outstanding characters further into the 1930s with season four. Babylon Berlin was an absolute risk from the very beginning. At the same time, the explosiveness and relevance of that time is still omnipresent today. This makes it all the more important and wonderful that our series, created in Germany, has become an internationally acclaimed success story for three seasons now. We are optimistic that we will be able to underscore this once again with season four."

Babylon Berlin is produced by X Filme Creative Pool in co-production with ARD Degeto, Sky and Beta Film. The chief editors of Babylon Berlin are Christine Strobl, Christoph Pellander and Carolin Haasis (ARD Degeto), Marcus Ammon, Frank Jastfelder and Lucia Vogdt (Sky Deutschland). The producers for X Filme are Stefan Arndt, Uwe Schott and Michael Polle, co-producers for Beta Film are Jan Mojto, Dirk Schürhoff and Moritz Herzogenberg. The third season was supported by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and the German Motion Picture Fund.
