Against All EvidenceTo save her daughter from the death penalty, a mother takes on the
American legal system
Regina Sommer may not be the best mother in the world; after all, she left her two daughters with her ex-husband in Los Angeles years ago and returned to live in Berlin. But when she learns that her youngest daughter Stefanie has become the prime - and only - suspect in the murder of her four-year-old son, Regina drops everything and flies to L.A.
There is little hope for the young woman, however, since all the evidence clearly points to her. Even Stefanie's defense attorney believes she is guilty. Yet the more Regina speaks with her daughter, the more she becomes convinced she is innocent. When Stefanie is convicted of murder at the trial, Regina's shock and dismay push her to undertake her own investigations with the aid of a team of eager young journalism students.
As they tirelessly deconstruct the suburban idyll in which Stefanie lived with her husband and her two children, smoldering layers of troubled relationships, affairs and betrayals gradually emerge, providing Stefanie's attorney with enough material to obtain a retrial. In court, Stefanie's attorney prods his witnesses so relentlessly that he extracts new details from them - details that throw a surprising new light on the case and that exonerate Stefanie.
