Her mother wants Christine, a young princess, to get engaged to count Georg. So that she can get to know her unsuspecting fiance before they are officially introduced, Christine travels incognito to Bad Ischl. The count is also going there, as he too is to take part in the forthcoming emperor's ball. Franzi, a Viennese seamstress, is bringing a gown to Bad Ischl for the ball, and her telling a little white lie results in her accidentally making the acquaintance of the count. The count is delighted by Franzi, especially since he thinks that she is the princess Christine. They fall in love with each other. Meanwhile the real princess' disguise is so successful that she is seen as being a gold-digger on the lookout for a wealthy man.
