On 12 September, the German submarine U-156 crosses paths with the British troop transporter Laconia in the Atlantic. The Germans attack; the Laconia sinks. What begins as a normal wartime encounter turns into one of the biggest and most controversial conflicts of World War II. The submarine commander faces an impossible dilemma as wounded soldiers and civilians cling to life rafts in the sea. Defying his superiors, he decides to surface and help the survivors.
