LourdesDrail in health, the young, sickly Bernadette comes from a poverty-stricken family. When the Virgin Mary appears to her in a grotto near Lourdes, no-one takes the girl seriously. The local priest and the police even try to hush up the entire incident - in vain, however, because Henri, the son of a Paris doctor, develops an interest in Bernadette. He is deeply impressed by her, and begins to take her faith very seriously.
As a trained psychologist he is confronted by Bernadette's case years later, when it gets dismissed by his prominent Parisian colleagues as a classic case of hysteria. When Henri's childless marriage threatens to fall apart he increasingly takes refuge in his work. He decides to write a book that will rehabilitate Bernadette - who has since entered a convent. In 1879, the year of Bernadette's death, Henri's wife makes a pilgrimage to Lourdes. When she discoveres she is pregnant two months later, Henri's marriage is saved. Unshakable in his faith now, Henri successfully counters Emile Zola - one of the people who considered the "Miracle of Lourdes" to be humbug.
