Phantom of the Opera
Phantom of the Opera
Adapted by the estimable Arthur Kopit from his 1982 play.Paris at the turn of the century. When the mysterious Phantom of the Opera hears the enchanting voice of a young woman who wants to train to be a singer for the first time, he becomes the teacher of her talent. The first great performance of the singer ends in a fiasco due to the intrigue of the jealous director's wife, and the Phantom abducts the beloved girl into his realm.
Handsome but almost high-camp remake of the venerable story, closest in spirit to the Claude Rains version, with Dance making a romantic Phantom; Lancaster is his resigned but protectiv father, while Polo plays Christine as if she's Cinderella. Adapted by the estimable Arthur Kopit from his 1982 play. Originally shown in two parts.
