Schubert - a Song of Love and Despair

Vienna in the early 19th century: artists, barons, Viennese girls - one of them is Hannerl Tschoell, whose heart beats faster when she has piano lessons with a certain Franzl Schubert. In his noisy backyard flat, the air thick with kitchen smells, he keeps on scribbling music, a glass of that year's wine in front of him. But the people about him have no clue that in that room there is one of their greatest composers: Franz Schubert (1797-1828). As he has been unsuccessful during all his life, he also lacks the confidence to declare himself to the attractive Hannerl - and so he loses her to a friend of his. His unhappiness is made up for by his music, which is one of the greatest achievements that the romantic age has produced.
