The Placebo Effect

Based on true events, a Stasi officer and his wife, seeking to save their teenage daughter, uncover the wheeling and dealing between Big Pharma and the East German state…

East Germany, 1988: When their teenage daughter is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, her parents are grateful for the offer of therapy with a promising new drug. Yet they soon learn that she is actually taking part in a clinical trial for a big Western pharma company. As her status deteriorates, they discover that she is being administered a placebo, while her trial partner is getting the real thing – and recovering accordingly. Outraged and determined to save her, her father, a high-ranking Stasi officer, risks his career, security and freedom to launch his own investigation into the clinic, its medical staff, Big Pharma, up to the very heads of state. And the closer he gets to the truth, the more unbelievable it seems.
