Mark Gatiss’ witty crime drama 'Bookish' skyrockets on UKTV’s U&Alibi

Featuring Primetime Emmy Award winner Mark Gatiss, who co-created the series and stars in the lead role, the series not only won over audiences in Britain, it also received widespread acclaim from international media describing the series as “a knotty, stylish and witty period piece” (THE SYDNEY MORINING HERALD), “a tasty nugget of absolute delight” (THE GUARDIAN) and “a rich, top-notch show” (DAILY MAIL).
Featuring Primetime Emmy Award winner Mark Gatiss, who co-created the series and stars in the lead role, Bookish is a stylish and colorful crime drama set in London in 1946 with a thoroughly modern sensibility and tone. The series follows a witty bookshop owner with an unusual name: Gabriel Book. As a former military spy, now working as a detective and consultant for the police, he solves their most uncrackable cases. But he has a secret – as a gay man in the 1940s, he lives in a mutually agreed-upon ‘lavender marriage’ with his childhood friend Trottie (Polly Walker). After having lost the love of his life in the war, Book’s past suddenly seems to catch up to him and poses a riddle that seems unsolvable, even for him.
The series is directed by Carolina Giammetta (The Drowning, Hollington Drive) and produced by Christopher Arcache (On The Road, Hotel Portofino). Alongside Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss, Bookish stars Polly Walker (Bridgerton), Connor Finch (Professor T), Joely Richardson, Daniel Mays, Elliott Levey, and Buket Kömür. The series was recently greenlit for a second season.
Bookish is produced by Eagle Eye Drama for UKTV and PBS in association with Happy Duck Films and supported by the Belgian Tax Shelter.
Beta Film holds worldwide distribution rights of all seasons, while PBS Distribution holds the North American rights.
