Beta Film boards ‘Blindspot Berlin’ ahead of world premiere at TIFF
Based on true events, Blindspot Berlin follows the investigation leading up to the 2016 Berlin Christmas market attack, exposing how institutional failures, bureaucracy, and political blind spots prevented authorities from stopping one of Germany's deadliest terrorist attacks.
Directed by David Nawrath (Your Honor) who also co-created and co-wrote the scripts with David Marian, Blindspot Berlin’s cast is led by Germany’s multiple awarded star Albrecht Schuch (All Quiet on the Western Front, Bad Banks, Berlin Alexanderplatz, System Crasher), alongside Tamer Trasoglu (Unfamiliar, Manta Manta) and up-and-coming actor Bayan Layla, one of German Films Face to Face talents of this year.

Years of research, conversations with investigators, lawyers, and survivors all pointed to the same thing: There are gaps in what we know about the events leading up to December 19, 2016 that have never been closed. We can't fill those gaps. But we can, based on everything we've learned, offer a serious and considered hypothesis about how things unfolded and why they went wrong. That felt like a responsibility worth taking on. And it took a team that was genuinely willing to go there."

On December 19, 2016, a truck plows into a crowd at a local Christmas market in Berlin, killing 13 and injuring dozens. Set more than a year before the attack, the series follows young police officer Isra (Bayan Layla) and investigator Frank (Albrecht Schuch) as they monitor the Salafist network around preacher Abu Walaa.
Both are fighting their own demons: While Isra hides a traumatic family history that could jeopardize her career, Frank buries himself in the case, straining his marriage. Frank recruits Murat (Tamer Trasoglu), an informant risking his own life to infiltrate the Islamist network. Soon, they encounter Anis Amri, a volatile, elusive, and increasingly dangerous young man. But despite their repeated warnings, neither the Federal Criminal Police Office nor the intelligence service take the threat seriously. Blocked by bureaucracy, political arrogance, and institutional blind spots, Frank and his team are left with their hands tied while the tragedy unfolds.
The series stars also Wael Alkhatib (Sun and Concrete), Jeanne Goursaud (Exterritorial, Barbarians, Kabul), Bernd Hölscher (The Captain, Munich Games, We Children from Bahnhof Zoo), and Sina Martins (From Hilde, with Love; Trunk: Locked In).
