Beta’s crime drama ‘Blindspot Berlin’ heads to Spain’s Filmin ahead of Spanish premiere
Jaume Ripoll, co-founder and CCO of Filmin: "From the moment we watched the first episodes, we had no hesitation in acquiring the series for Filmin. It is an outstanding example of how to craft a thriller based on true events while remaining entirely faithful to the real story. Its technical excellence, exceptional performances, and direction that revives the very best of the European thriller tradition make Blindspot Berlin one of Filmin’s flagship series for Q1 2027."
Christian Gockel, EVP International Operations Spain and Portugal, Beta Film : “Blindspot Berlin turns a chapter of recent German history into a gripping, character-driven thriller with universal appeal. Its combination of true-crime urgency, outstanding performances, and a story about the consequences of institutional failure makes it a powerful proposition for international audiences. Filmin recognized that potential. We are proud that Blindspot Berlin already premiered at TIFF and Hamburg, and will now celebrate its Spanish premiere at the South International Series Festival in Cádiz. We are confident that the series will continue to engage audiences around the world.”
Based on true events, Blindspot Berlin follows the investigation leading up to the 2016 Berlin Christmas market attack, exposing how institutional failures, bureaucracy, and political blind spots prevented authorities from stopping one of Germany's deadliest terrorist attacks.
The series is directed by David Nawrath (Your Honor), who co-created and co-wrote the screenplay with David Marian. Multi-award-winning German actor Albrecht Schuch (All Quiet on the Western Front, Bad Banks, Berlin Alexanderplatz, System Crasher) leads the cast alongside Tamer Trasoglu (Unfamiliar, Manta Manta) and rising actor Bayan Layla, one of this year’s German Films Face to Face talents.
Berlin, December 19, 2016. A truck plows into a crowd at a local Christmas market, killing 13 and injuring dozens. It marks one of the most devastating terrorist attacks in Germany. More than a year earlier, young police officer Isra (Bayan Layla) and investigator Frank (Albrecht Schuch) are monitoring the Salafist scene around preacher Abu Walaa. Both are fighting their own demons: While Isra hides a traumatic family history that could jeopardize her career, Frank buries himself in the case, straining his marriage. Frank recruits Murat (Tamer Trasoglu), an informant risking his own life to infiltrate the Islamist network. Soon, they encounter Anis Amri, a volatile, elusive, and increasingly dangerous young man. But despite their repeated warnings, neither the Federal Criminal Police Office nor the intelligence service take the threat seriously. Blocked by bureaucracy, political arrogance, and institutional blind spots, Frank and his team are left with their hands tied while the tragedy unfolds.
The ensemble cast of Blindspot Berlin also includes Wael Alkhatib (Sun and Concrete), Jeanne Goursaud (Exterritorial, Barbarians, Kabul), Bernd Hölscher (The Captain, Munich Games, We Children from Bahnhof Zoo) and Sina Martens (From Hilde, with Love; Trunk: Locked In).
The limited series is produced by NEUESUPER in co-production with ARD Degeto Film, rbb, NDR and HR, and distributed internationally by Beta Film.
