"Babylon Berlin" cracks 70 million views in Germany

The success story continues: With its fourth season, Beta’s hit-series Babylon Berlin has cracked the mark of a total of 70 million digital views since the launch in 2018. The new episodes of the gripping crime series set in 1930’s Berlin follow in the footsteps of previous seasons with ten million views on the ARD Mediathek within the first week and a strong start in October on ARD’s linear service with four million viewers and a market share of over 15%. Simultaneously, the event Babylon Berlin in Concert, featuring the award-winning soundtrack with stars such as Max Raabe, drew in almost a million views digitally and linear. The fifth season of the series directed by Tom Tykwer, Achim von Borries, and Henk Handloegten is currently being developed.
Babylon Berlin has become an international phenomenon, sold to more than 140 territories worldwide, with Season four maintaining its high-end storytelling and cast, earning the series a comparison to “House of Cards and Breaking Bad in its ambition and scope” by The Times. Based on Volker Kutscher's novel Goldstein, the returning cast members include Volker Bruch and Liv Lisa Fries, alongside a talented ensemble. The storyline takes viewers to 1930’s Berlin, where the global stock market crash marks the end of the Golden Twenties ushers in the Great Depression and a time of significant change as the Nazis' march to power gains momentum.
Babylon Berlin Season four has already travelled around the globe this year, airing in Latin America, the UK, and Scandinavia, with an Australian premiere on SBS scheduled for 2024. Babylon Berlin 4 is produced by X Filme Creative Pool in co-production with ARD Degeto, WDR, Sky, and Beta Film, with funding from Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Film- and Medienstiftung NRW, and the German Motion Picture Fund.
