“Babylon Berlin 3” cracks 100-territory mark
Munich, 7 October 2019. Beta Film’s Babylon Berlin continues its international rollout. The third season, which is still in post-production, secured deals in 100 territories so far. Most recently, Africa’s biggest subscription TV network M-Net and China’s Lemon Tree closed the season three contract for the multi-awarded Tom Tykwer/Henk Handloegten/Achim von Borries drama. Further deals will be negotiated during MIPCOM in Cannes next week. Babylon Berlin 3 will premiere within the next months in Germany on Sky and later on ARD as well as throughout Europe and the world, among them the U.S. (Netflix), Italy (Sky and Rai), France (Canal +), Spain (Movistar+) and UK (Sky).
With its sweeping ratings success and acclaim by critics in its home territory and worldwide, Babylon Berlin has become synonym with international relevance of high-end drama made in Germany. The 28-hour show was honored with numerous awards, among them several German TV Awards as well as festival prizes in Seoul, Shanghai, Spain, Austria and most recently the European Achievement in Fiction Series Award by the European Film Academy.
Season three kicks off in fall 1929, during the tumultuous weeks before Black Friday's stock market crash. Inspector Gereon Rath (Volker Bruch) and Charlotte Ritter (Liv-Lisa Fries) are assigned to investigate the violent on-set death of an actress, only to realize that the film industry is just as rotten as the underworld. In the meantime, the Black Reichswehr are regathering their forces for their next attempt to bring down democracy and use all opportunities to provoke more clashes with the Communists. However, at night all seems forgotten and the city still dances on the edge of the volcano as if there's no tomorrow…
Babylon Berlin is produced by X Filme Creative Pool in co-production with ARD Degeto, WDR, Sky and Beta Film.
