A captain in the Austro-Hungarian army is pensioned off prematurely. He uses his free time to visit his nephew's remote garrison. In so doing, he ends up wearing the uniform of an imperial-royal field marshal. Wielding his new power, he creates quite a stir in the sleepy garrison by dismissing lazy officers and promoting diligent petty officers. As the swindle is discovered, nobody wants to take the blame, and so the false field marshal gets off scot-free.
