Mario and the MagicianStarring Julian Sands, Anna Galiena and Klaus Maria Brandauer
Actor-director Klaus Maria Brandauer sensuously unravels Thomas Mann's parable on Fascism set in the late 1920s. As every year, the Fuhrmanns are spending their holidays at a seaside resort in Italy.
This time, however, the German family feels something dark stirring beneath the town's placid facade. It is a feeling of hostility embodied by the magician Cipolla, whose hypnotic charm conceals a cynical lust to destroy. A series of incidents persuades the Fuhrmanns to leave, but not before a final performance by the magician, in which a dangerous experiment leaves everyone numbed.Mario and the Magician won the prestigious Andrei Tarkovsky Prize and the Special Jury Prize at the 1995 Moscow Film Festival.
