Katja is about to marry Markus, who comes from a prominent Hamburg family. Katja has a four year-old son, Philip, whose father Jürgen has been off at sea. As if dictated by fate, it is on this evening that Jürgen returns to Hamburg - just as a dangerous low-pressure weather system is advancing on the city.
At the same time, meteorologist Susanne has already detected indications of the potentially disastrous storm, but her warnings for a possible evacuation go unheeded. To better determine the magnitude of the danger, she goes to an off shore oil rig. There, the storm shows its terrible force, and she realizes that her worst fears have become reality. When the oil rig threatens to collapse, she and her colleague Alexander fight desperately to prevent a disaster...
With the storm reaching the shore and the tide moving up the Elbe river, thousands of people are in danger. Forced to fight for their lives, the citizens of Hamburg stick together, carrying out selfless acts of heroism. When Katja and her son are nearly swept away by masses of water, Jürgen saves them at the last minute. Compelled to take a good look at her life, Katja realizes what is most important to her...
